The Perfect Engagement Session - How to Prepare

Updated: Sep 3, 2020

I love engagement sessions, so much so that I include them in my top tier packages! They are a lot less busy and stressful than the wedding day, and they give us time to get to know each other with no pressure or timeline to stick to. If you're like me, you might feel a little uncomfortable in front of the camera, and that's okay! It's my job as a photographer to put you at ease.  If you have some questions about how to prepare for your engagement session I've compiled some tips below.

1. What To Wear

I appreciate when clothing has texture and movement, so, for this reason, I always suggest something that has a nice flow. A dress or skirt is a good choice, and I recommend something on the longer side so you feel comfortable moving around and in sitting positions. If you don't like the idea of a dress or skirt, I suggest wearing your favorite jumpsuit, or 'dressy' look. The key thing here is dressing up. Even if you don't consider yourself a stylish person, I find that putting on your 'nice clothes' puts you in the right mindset for being photographed. If you or your partner don't like the idea of formal wear I suggest wearing something casual that can be accessorized. For instance, scarves, vests, and fun jewelry can elevate a look. A denim top or chambray is a great way to look casual and also stylish, especially for men. The most important thing is to wear what makes you feel most confident!

2. What Not to Wear

I'm sorry to say but stripes do not look good in photographs. Thin stripes can look especially distorted on digital screens. I also suggest avoiding hats as they cast shadows on the face and ruin hair. If you tend to carry bulky items in your pockets, or stack hair ties on your wrist, I suggest taking these out and off before our shoot. I also suggest you take off your Apple Watch if you wear one, this will look outdated in a few years when Apple inevitably updates their design.

3. How Else to Prepare

Spend a little time the night before doing your version of self-care, because we look our best when we feel our best. I love doing a face mask and taking a bubble bath to feel recharged, but for you, self-care might look like meditation or getting your nails done.

I know sometimes life gets in the way, but I want you to feel awesome at our shoot, so take a moment to show yourself some love. If this sounds impossible given your schedule please don't worry- you will still look amazing.

If you want to take the extra step I suggest eating your favorite nutritious meals and drinking plenty of water the day before. Please make sure to eat and hydrate before our shoot to avoid any fatigue or hangriness. I always carry trail mix in my bag, so let me know if you need a snack break!

4. Last but not least- Have fun!

big part of my job is making sure you feel comfortable in front of the camera, and I'll make sure you look your best. Photos are best when you are genuinely enjoying yourself, so relax and have fun! It's not every day we take a moment to capture love with our significant others, and you should enjoy and cherish this time together.
